The power doesn’t always go out with a warning. Sometimes the first sign is a flicker in the kitchen lights, a pause in the wi-fi or the sudden silence of the air conditioner on the hottest day of the year. Other times, there are warning signs everywhere: heat alerts, thunderstorm watches, utility messages asking you to conserve energy. 

This is what summer now feels like in many parts of the US. Over the Fourth of July weekend, severe storms and extreme heat left nearly a million residents without power across the Midwest and Northeast, according to the Associated Press. A few days later, Reuters reported that more than 373,000 homes and businesses were still without electricity after severe weather swept through several states. At the same time, heat was pushing the grid hard: PJM, the country’s largest grid operator, said emergency conservation measures helped keep demand just shy of its all-time record. 

For homeowners, the lesson is simple. Resilience is no longer only about preparing for a once-in-a-decade disaster. It is about getting through an ordinary summer day when ordinary demands suddenly become extraordinary. 

Morning: effortless prep 

It’s 6am. Your house is waking up. Coffee is brewing, phones are charging, the refrigerator is humming and the EV in the garage needs enough range for school drop-off, errands and maybe anevening trip across town. Outside, the forecast is already uncomfortable. By mid-afternoon, the temperature will climb. Later, storms may roll in. 

A conventional home reacts to all of this one device at a time. The air conditioner turns on when the thermostat tells it to. The EV charges when it is plugged in. Solar panels produce power when the sun is shining. A battery, if there is one, follows its own settings. Each piece may be useful, but you’re still left hoping everything lines up. 

A smart home behaves differently. It looks ahead. If a storm is coming, it keeps more energy in reserve. If the EV is plugged in, it makes sure the car has enough charge for the day and enough left over to help the house if the grid goes down. If electricity is cheaper in the morning than late afternoon, it plans around that. You don’t need to study a dashboard before breakfast. Your house is already getting ready. 

By 10am, the solar panels are doing their best work. On a normal day, that solar power might run the home, charge the battery or fill the EV. On a risky day, it matters even more. Sunlight becomes stored comfort: a cold fridge, charged devices, internet, lights after dark and enough cool air to make the house livable if the power fails. 

That distinction matters because summer can be an energy-intensive season across much of the US. Air conditioning alone accounted for about 19% of electricity used in homes in 2020, according to the US Energy Information Administration. If your home has a pool, the pump can be another major load; Energy Star says a pool pump can be a home’s second-largest energy user. Add EV charging, guests, laundry, cooking and work-from-home, and your house can draw heavily from the grid just when everyone else is doing the same thing. 

Afternoon: cool even when it’s hot 

At 3pm, your house is under stress. The air conditioner is working hard. The pool pump might be scheduled to run. Someone has just returned from running errands in the EV. Utility prices may be higher, and the grid may be closer to its limit. 

This is where smart home energy becomes practical. It doesn’t ask you to choose between comfort and cost every hour of the day. It can delay what matters less, preserve what does, and use stored energy when the grid is most expensive or most strained. The pool pump can wait. The EV does not need to charge at full speed right now. The battery can help carry the home through the peak. 

The goal is not to make you think more about energy; it’s to help you think about it less. 

Evening: stormy weather 

At 5:30pm, a thunderstorm hits. The sky darkens, wind picks up and — there goes the grid. In a conventional home, everything stops. In a resilient home, the important things keep going. The fridge keeps working. The internet stays on. Lights and outlets keep working. Your home battery covers essential loads. If the outage lasts longer, a bidirectional EV can become a much larger backup source. 

That is not a future theory. During Hurricane Beryl in Texas, Reuters reported that some homeowners used EVs to keep power flowing at home for days. The same report noted that more than 630,000 EVs on US roads are already equipped for bidirectional charging. 

By 9pm, the outage itself is no longer the concern. At this point, you're worried about not knowing when the power will return. A resilient home is built for that uncertainty, making the most of the energy available so you can do what you need to. 

That's where smart home energy earns its keep. It looks beyond what's happening right now and prepares for what may come next. If more storms are expected overnight, it can hold more energy in reserve. If tomorrow morning's solar production looks limited, it can be more careful with available battery capacity. If your EV is plugged in, it can balance the charge you'll need tomorrow with the energy your home may need tonight. The goal is simple: make the energy you have go further, so the outage fades into the background. 

You shouldn’t need to worry all the time 

The bigger grid story is real. Extreme weather is causing more outages: Climate Central found that 80% of major US power outages from 2000 to 2023 were weather-related. Demand is also changing as homes, vehicles and businesses electrify, while data centers add new pressure in many regions. But you don’t need to solve the whole grid. You just need a better buffer between the grid and your daily life.
